- 1 videocassette (30 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
- Summary
- This tape by Hopi videomaker Victor Masayesva combines documentary with video effects to present a subtle yet cogent reflection concerning the conflicts between Hopi traditions and the "Western" appropriation of artifacts in the name of science, anthropology and art. A group of Native American high school students visit the Smithsonian Institution to observe the high-tech procedures used to date and analyze archaeological artifacts. The students' experience contrasts with the gentle instructions of a Hopi grandmother who demonstrates to her granddaughter how the clay used to make her pots is extracted from the earth. As she fashions her pottery, the elderly woman recounts Hopi myths and explains important rituals, including the name-giving ceremony performed for newborn members of the tribe. When her granddaughter asks why she was not permitted to attend the field trip, her grandmother voices concern that the items housed in the Smithsonian are sacred objects taken illicitly from a holy site, "Siskyavi," the place of chasms.
