- Summary
- Gelsomina, a young girl, is sold by her mother to a circus strongman, who uses her in his act; despite mistreatment, she eventually falls in love with him. Fellini's tragic story of Gelsomina, the waif who is enslaved by Zampano, a circus strongman, is an important transitional work in Italian cinema. Its poetic and lyrical qualities set it apart from the literalness of the neo-realist school which dominated post-World War II Italy.
