Summary
This documentary is about rap as it is declaimed on the streets of New York a cappella. A literary descendant of beat poetry, rap is a poetic "news report" of issues which impact on the lives of inner-city youth. The youngsters who perform in this tape rap about love, drugs, unemployment, poverty, politics, racial divisions, and homelessness. Cameras visit Central Park East II Elementary School in Harlem where 5th and 6th graders compose raps concerning teenage pregnancy and the 8th Amendment's proviso against cruel and unusual punishment. At a Harlem afterschool program, three young boys perform a rap about Marcus Garvey and the red, black and green flag of Black nationalism. Rappers Ed DuRante and Kira Arne analyze this literary/musical form as an expression of frustration and revolution.
