Description

Summary
This film explores the social and political realities of Central America by focusing on Teatro La Fragua, a grassroots theater group in Honduras founded by Jesuit priest, Jack Warner. Traveling the backroads of this impoverished country, the actors present plays which address the issues of illiteracy, exploitation, malnutrition and the menacing presence of the Contras. The troupe's members, seen in rehearsal and actual performance, describe their frightening brushes with the military but stress their commitment to bringing social justice to people who have never seen a play. Warner and his group of thespians conduct workshops to re-interpret the Gospels in terms of present conditions and collaborate on a play, drawn from Mayan mythology, which they perform for the inhabitants of a remote mountain village.
