Summary
This documentary profiles Edouard Manet (1832-1883), the eminent French painter, heralded as a leader of the avant-garde who refused to be associated with the Impressionist movement. Works displayed at the 1983 Manet exhibition held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and the Grand Palais in Paris are examined. The complex and often contradictory spirit of Manet's paintings and his debt to old masters such as Titian and Velasquez are analyzed. Cameras visit the Musée d'Orsay in Paris as well as those French and Spanish locales that exude the ambiance of Manet's time.
