Summary
This profile explores the life of Edgar Degas, a complex and unorthodox artist who was a painter, printmaker, photographer, sculptor and poet. It describes his evolution from history painter to what writer David Thompson calls "the most penetrating portrayer of modern life of the 19th century." Especially controversial was Degas' treatment of women whom he dared to depict in often unglamorous activities. Other favored subjects include the ballet class, the racecourse and the railway. The program includes many original paintings, drawings and prints as well as many works rarely seen in exhibitions: Degas' notebooks, wax sculptures and monotypes.
