- Summary
- Cousteau's divers have filmed the underwater life of this shy sea mammal which is fighting its way back to an ecological niche after near extinction by hunters. The program probes the economic factors that again threaten the sea otter's existence. In Alaskan waters, members of Cousteau's crew capture a sea otter for observation aboard their floating laboratory, where they study the animal's habits, the sounds it makes, and film all aspects of its behavior. Later, the ship moves to Monterey Bay, California, where commercial fishermen threaten to eliminate the otter for eating the abalone in their fishing areas. Spokesmen for conservationists and fishermen present their arguments in this dispute, but it appears that without laws to protect them, the otters are once again at the mercy of man.
