- Summary
- The U.S. launches the giant Saturn rocket designed to carry the Apollo capsule bearing a man to the moon within the next few years. For the first time in the space race, the United States has surpassed Russia. The first grain to be shipped to the Soviet Union is loaded in Norfolk, Virginia. The Greek-Turkish feud threatens to erupt on the island of Cyprus. The Beatles who have revolutionized the music scene in Britain arrive for their first American tour. New York celebrates the dedication of Shea Stadium in Flushing Meadow. The 15 nations of NATO meet in Holland to discuss the stormy situation in Cyprus and the status of French troops. Congress passes the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Ominous events in Vietnam anticipate greater U.S. involvement. Two American ships are attacked by Communist PT boats while patrolling international waters in the Gulf of Tonkin off North Vietnam. In response to this act of aggression, President Lyndon Johnson acts to increase American military presence in the area. At home, Hurricane Dora wreaks havoc in Florida and Georgia. President Johnson wins a landslide victory over Senator Barry Goldwater to be elected 36th President of the U.S. The Berlin Wall is opened for visits from both the East and the West.
