Summary
In his State of the Union message, President Kennedy asks for the power to cut taxes in case of a recession and to lower tariff barriers. He pledges his administration to fight for medical care for the aged and a plan to attack adult illiteracy. Later, at a news conference, Kennedy will berate steel companies for raising steel prices. The historic flight of Colonel John Glenn in the Friendship Seven is recorded. A camera within the capsule shows the astronaut as he travels in space and his reactions are heard as he orbits the earth 3 times. In the push for desegration, James H. Meredith, a 29-year-old black man, is registered at the University of Mississippi despite the efforts of Governor Ross Barnett and other state authorities to bar him from the school. The showdown between the U.S. and the Soviet Union has led the Russians to dismantle their rocket installations in Cuba. Acting Secretary-General U Thant is voted Secretary General of the United Nations. Marilyn Monroe, one of the most famous stars in Hollywood, dies at 36, an apparent suicide.
