Summary
In Italy, the Crown Prince of Piedmont and his wife become the first members of royalty to participate in the annual ceremony marking the anniversary of the founding of Fascism in 1919. A vast crowd of 50,000 assembles in Karachi as Gandhi arrives for the National Congress. In the U.S.S.R., a treaty is signed between Russia and Turkey that halts naval operations in the Black Sea. New York City sees the completion of the Empire State Building, but Mayor "Gentleman Jimmy" Walker is accused of neglect of office. The first television image holds promise for the future. The Army and Navy demonstrate new tactical weapons. The sports world mourns the death of renowned Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne. The Cardinals win the World Series. The 72nd Congress begins its session with a Democratic majority. After passage of the bonus law over President Hoover's veto, veterans caught up in the nation's unemployment crisis storm bureau offices to file for loans. The tape concludes with an overview of 1931's dramatic highlights: an earthquake in Nicaragua, the aviation achievement of Wiley Post and Harold Gatty, a catastrophic flood in China, the overthrow of Spain's Bourbon monarchy, and the death of aviator Lowell Bayles.
