Summary
Incorporating rare archival and newsreel footage, this documentary chronicles the lofty aims and sometimes uneven history of the "blue helmets," multinational soldiers deployed in United Nations peacekeeping operations around the world. U.N. correspondents, former delegates and commanders chart the history of the peacekeeping force from its roots in the League of Nations, its official founding in 1948 and myriad assignments in global hot spots. They detail the involvement of the blue helmets during the Suez crisis of the 1950s and 60s, the Six Day War of 1967 and the Yom Kippur War of 1973. Sections also outline the U. N.'s involvement in Korea, in the Congo and on the the dangerously divided island of Cyprus. Recently, the U.N. forces have been integral presence in Namibia, easing the country's transition to independence.
