Description
1 videocassette (96 min.) : sd., b&w.; 1/2 in.
Summary
This naturalistic comedy/drama, set in Eastern Europe but shot in New Jersey, is the story of Yankl, a young man who wishes to attend the gymnasium but is instead apprenticed to the hard-drinking blacksmith Bendl. Eventually inheriting the smithy, Yankl sees too many women and consumes too much liquor until he meets and marries the orphan Tamara. Although he loves his sickly wife, he cannot help but succumb to the more sensuous charms of his neighbor's wife Rivke. At the conclusion, Yankl is transformed into a "mentsh," a conscientious worker, husband and father. Resembling Soviet cinema of the period, the film features the first explicitly working-class hero in American-Yiddish cinema.
