Summary
Ever since Anna Mae Wong's portrayal of an Asian villainess in the 1924 version of the Thief of Bagdad, Hollywood has continually propounded negative and/or sterotypical images of the Asian and Asian American woman. This documentary overview offers a visual inventory of cinematic depictions of Asians and analyzes them with regard to the vicissitudes of the social and political climates. Screen roles were prescribed by the Motion Picture Code, anti-miscegnation and immigration laws and America's see-sawing diplomatic relations with China and Japan. Media critics and actresses like Nancy Kwan, Nobu McCarthy and Kim Miyori comment on the types of roles set aside for Asian women, namely, "dragon lady," "geisha girl," and "lotus blossom." For one Asian American film producer, "passivity is the dragon every woman must slay." Recently, emerging Asian American filmmakers like Wayne Wang are actively making movies designed to dismantle debilitating Asian stereotypes.
