Summary
Challenging the expectations of their Jewish middle-class parents, Grete Stern and Ellen Auerbach established an advertising photography studio, Ringl + Pit, in Berlin in 1929. Before fleeing Germany in the 1930's, they won international prizes using humor and irony to create images that subvert the images of women in mainstream advertising.
