- Summary
- Battling Butler (1926), b&w, 21 min.: Based on the musical by Stanley Brightman and Austin Melford, this comedy combines Keaton's deadpan demeanor and physical agility with a dramatic storyline. Keaton stars as Alfred Butler, an indolent young man whose wealthy father sends him into the country hoping it will make a man out of him. Ironically, he is mistaken for "Battling Butler," a fierce prizefighter. To impress his lady love, Alfred embarks on a comically inept training regimen, but his charade is complicated by the arrival of the true boxing champion. In the end, the diminutive combatant summons up the needed courage and triumphs over the boxer. The haunted house (921), color (tinted), 20 min.: Buster Keaton is a bank clerk who arrives at work in a chauffeur-driven Rolls Royce. He becomes embroiled with a villainous bank teller who maintains a gang of men dressed as ghosts to frighten people away from his house which is full of booby traps. To further complicate matters, a visting opera company doing Faust gets mixed up with the whole thing. The frozen north (1922), b&w, 17 min.: Filmed on location near Lake Tahoe in the High Sierras of northern California, this Keaton comedy is a tour-de-force of fantasy and a parody of movie legends William S. Hart and Erich von Stroheim. It is also noteworthy for its imposition of urban living on the rugged West - the subway station from which the hero initially emerges and the taxi-slege that unexpectedly pulls up in the snowy wilderness.
