Summary
Mierle Ukeles is a maintenance artist. She is the official artist-in-residence at the New York City Sanitation Department, where she works to change the way workers are viewed by themselves and by the rest of society. Her projects range from the whimsical "Ballet Mechanique," a ballet for three sweepers, to the "Social Mirror," a garbage truck covered with mirrors, to the "Touch Sanitation" show, an environmental work depicting the everyday chores of the sanitation workers.
