- Summary
- During World War I, James Reese Europe, the first black artist to perform at Carnegie Hall, took sixty musicians to France to play as part of the 369th Infantry Band. Since then, a host of American jazz musicians, fleeing marginal existences and discrimination at home, have taken up residence on the continent. There, American ex-patriate artists perform, for the most part, for appreciative audiences, and are able to develop their individual styles due to government sponsorship of the arts. In this documentary, jazz performers discuss their reasons for leaving the U.S. and describe the European artistic climate. Their stories are punctuated by performances, including archival footage of jazz legends Billie Holiday and Ben Webster. Musical numbers include: "Soft and furry" (Johnny Griffin); "March medley" (Art Ensemble of Chicago); "Why" (Woody Shaw Quartet); "In a sentimental mood" (Art Farmer); " All blues," "Summertime" (Richard Davis, Ben Sidran); "Fine and mellow" (Billie Holiday Orchestra with Ben Webster); "Hi-fly" (Randy Weston); "Red top" (Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin); "Last night when we were young" (Phil Woods Quartet).
