Summary
Dollar Brand, pianist, composer, and arranger, was born Adolph Johannes Brand in Cape Town, South Africa. Leaving South Africa for Europe in 1962, Brand met Duke Ellington in 1963 in Zurich. In 1966, Brand moved to the United States and in 1968, converted to Islam. Notwithstanding his far-flung past, Abdullah Ibrahim took Cape Town with him. The city's mixture of African, Asian and European cultures reverberate in the music he writes for his septet, Ekaya. His compositions echo with spirituals, South African marabi rhythms, jazz and samba. In this portrait, Ibrahim recalls his childhood and the traditional underpinnings of his music, and explains the meanings of titles like "Tuan guru" (an exiled Indonesian Moslem teacher) and "Water from an ancient well." He also denounces the apartheid system which has ravaged his homeland.
