Description
1 videocassette (48 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
Summary
Every year the islands of Trinidad and Tobago are caught up in the spirited festivities of Carnival. Intrinsic to this celebration is the musical phenomenon of huge steel band orchestras composed of over 300 steel drums. These instruments, constructed exclusively from oil drums called "pan," have been hammered, cut, heated, tuned and transformed into wonders of musical versatility. This impressionistic documentary records the activities surrounding the week-long steel band competition known as Panorama. The winners are showcased in a festival that continues for days starting with Jouvert, "a Dyonisian frenzy" going back to the days of slavery and ending with the fancy-dress processions of the top bands.
