Summary
As a high school student, Anna Rosmus entered an essay contest to write about what she believed was the war-time resistance of her hometown, Passau, Germany, to the Nazi regime. Instead of resistance, she uncovered evidence of her community's complicity with the Nazi government. Anna's dark discoveries caused a furor in Passau with many of the townspeople launching a hate campaign against her that continues to this day. In this profile, Anna, now an adult, provides a tour of her birthplace pointing out the honored gravesites of SS members as well as the remote, forgotten burial places of Russian prisoners of war and the obscured locale of a concentration camp. Convinced that Germany should never forget its past, Rosmus talks to schoolchildren about the town's troubled history. Anna's experience was dramatized in the Academy Award-nominated film The nasty girl, directed by Michael Verhoeven.
