Summary

The interview begins with Aikens' youth in Georgia, his early education and travails at Morehouse College, his service and release from the Navy, and the eventual decision that redirected the course of his life entirely. Aikens recounts how he traveled to New York City with $32.00 in his pocket and a plan to wash dishes at the Waldorf Astoria, and how it soon came about by happenstance that he was able to exchange that aspiration for an audition with the Katherine Dunham Company. The interview concludes with a discussion of his career after he retired from dancing.
