Summary
Excerpts from Oresteia (a musical suite derived from Xenakis's earlier opera and staged with dancers, singers and projections) are interspersed with panel discussion with director/choreographer Luca Viggetti, musical scholar Sharon Kanach and Xenakis's widow Françoise Xenakis. The panelists discuss the origins of the project; Xenakis's feelings about opera, Noh drama and ancient Greek drama; his efforts to develop an authentic style of performing ancient Greek texts; the story and significance of the Oresteia trilogy; the staging and choreography of the work; political influences on Xenakis's career; his architectural work and interest in the connections between architecture and music. Wilbur Pauley joins the panel and speaks about the difficulty of the singing parts and the use of the psaltery in the score.
