Summary
A documentary on the third generation (post World War II) of Japanese contemporary dancers: Mizuomi Ikeda, Takashi Nishida, Hiroshi Shoji, Rina Atsumi, and Koh Fujii, Shigeharu Honda and others. The film also explores the origins, development, and qualities of Butoh and the careers of Tatsumi Hijikata and Kazuo Ohno. Includes interviews with the choreographers and brief video excerpts of the following choreographic works: Tune of devil, The Samidas as ever, and Scenes in preparation for kabuki theater by Ikeda; Dry-bones and Paradise now by Nishida; Toy and giant and Lovers by Shoji; Tommy, The earth and Poesy by Atsumi; Tatsumi Hijikata and Japan: rebellion of the body by Hijikata; Monkeys vs. crabs and Hokusai now by Fuji; Mon chapeau and Dance of my selfhood by Honda.
