  • Harold Varmus delivers a lecture on the role of genes in cells, evolution and cancer, accompanied by slides, animations and original music composed and performed by his son Jacob Varmus. The lecture is divided into three sections: 1. Cells, their structure and functions, the cell division process, the development of an embryo from a single cell, the structure and function of DNA, how DNA instructs cells to create proteins, the process by which DNA is copied when a cell divides; 2. Evolution, how mutations in DNA create the diversity of life forms through the process of natural selection; 3. Cancer, how random mutation of DNA can affect cell behavior to create cancers, traditional methods of treating cancer and new methods geared at countering specific mutant genes. Throughout the lecture Varmus draws comparisons with music and art. Animations illustrate cell division, the copying of DNA, the creation of RNA and proteins, and the behavior of cancerous cells.
