Summary
This program celebrates the career of composer Charles Wuorinen on the occasion of his 70th birthday. During the first panel discussion, Wuorinen and Sean Curran discuss the music and choreography for The mission of Virgil, inspired by episodes from Dante's Inferno, and speak about composing music for dance and choreographing to a score. In the second discussion, Wuorinen and James Levine discuss their collaborations; Levine comments on the qualities of Wuorinen's music, and they speak about John Ashbery's poetry and the challenges of setting text to music. A video of Ashbery reading his poems precedes the performance of Ashberyana.
