- Summary
- This program highlights the role played by the Jerome Robbins Dance Division of the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts in recording and preserving dance and aiding scholars and choreographers. A conversation with Christopher Wheeldon is interspersed with video recordings of Wheeldon's choreographic works. The panelists discuss the ballets excerpted in the clips; Wheeldon speaks about the settings and concepts for Swan lake and Variations sérieuses, the music for Polyphonia, and the scenery and costume design for Commedia. Wheeldon and McBride discuss the mechanics of filming dance, the significance of recording both wide and tight shot versions, the importance of archival footage in restaging ballets, and the experience of choreographing for the camera. Wheeldon speaks about the dynamics of Morphoses/The Wheeldon Company, how as a small pick-up company it differs from larger ballet companies; what he looks for in dancers; his feelings about retiring from dancing; Jerome Robbins' influence on his career; and his future plans.
