- Omotayo Wunmi Olaiya (costume designer, composer, fashion designer) discusses receiving a Bessie Award for costume design; how her career began by creating costumes for friends including Marlies Yearby (choreographer) and Ron Brown (choreographer); her process for creating Ron Brown's Upside down costumes that began by joining the company for rehearsals in the Ivory Coast where she located and learned about guinea brocade fabrics; displays her sketches for Upside down; her first experience designing for the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater creating costumes for two choreographic works in the same season, Donald McKayle's Danger run and Ron Brown's Grace, and displays her color costume sketches for these works; discusses the importance of fabric selection and the individual dancer's needs when creating costumes; creating costumes for Ron Brown's Come ye, and multi-choreographer piece for the Dayton Contemporary Dance Company by Donald Byrd, Rennie Harris, Kevin Ward, Reggie Wilson entitled, colôr-ógrǎphy, n. the dances of Jacob Lawrence; how she first learned to create designs for her singing performances and displaying her outfits; currently working on remaking Upside down and Grace costumes for new dancers; process for creating costumes for two works, Ron Brown's Ife by showing storyboards and costume sketches, and Marlies Yearby's Brown butterfly by showing costume sketches; and concludes with her dance audience/fans asking to buy outfits from Brown's Grace spurring her to sell dresses to the public as a fashion designer.
