Description
1 videodisc (NTSC) (70 min.) : sd., col.; 4 3/4 in.
Summary
Excerpts from Christopher Wheeldon's ballet Commedia are interspersed with discussion of the ballet's creation and Wheeldon's collaboration with designers Isabel Toledo, who designed the costumes, and Ruben Toledo, who designed the scenery. Wheeldon discusses how the ballet commemorates the centenery of the Ballets Russes; his decision to use Stravinsky's Pulcinella suite; his working process, the challenges of directing a company, and future plans for Morphoses. Isabel and Ruben Toledo speak about the themes and ideas that went into their designs, the inspiration they drew from the commedia del'arte tradition, and details of their collaboration with Wheeldon. The program also includes slides of designs, fittings and performance photographs; home movies made by Wheeldon recording the company's visit to Australia; and a rehearsal demonstration in which Wheeldon works with Cory Stearns and Hee Seo on a pas de deux from Commedia.
