Summary
KOOL, dancing in my mind is "a performance/portrait of choreographer and dancer Suzushi Hanayagi by Robert Wilson, Carla Blank and Richard Rutkowski"--program notes. The project was commissioned to accompany the exhibition The third mind: American artists contemplate Asia, 1860-1989 at the Guggenheim Museum. The performance is introduced by a conversation between Alexandra Munroe and Robert Wilson. Wilson speaks about how he first met Suzushi Hanayagi, a Japanese dancer who performed both traditional and avant-garde dance; about their first collaboration, The CIVIL warS; their common interests, including abstraction and the purity of movement. Wilson describes the origins of the project KOOL, which began when he visited Hanayagi in Osaka, Japan, when she was sufferering from advanced Alzheimer's disease. Wilson created a video of Hanayagi's face, hands and feet, which accompanies the live performance, along with archival video footage of performances by Hanayagi. The sound score includes music written by David Byrne for The knee plays, and the text of letters, writings and interviews with Hanayagi, read by others. Wilson explains the significance of the project's title. A complete performance of the piece follows.
