Summary

KOOL, dancing in my mind is "a performance/portrait of choreographer and dancer Suzushi Hanayagi by Robert Wilson, Carla Blank and Richard Rutkowski"--program notes. The project was commissioned to accompany the exhibition The third mind: American artists contemplate Asia, 1860-1989 at the Guggenheim Museum. The performance is introduced by Alexandra Munroe and Carla Blank, who speak about Robert Wilson's past collaborations with Suzushi Hanayagi, a Japanese dancer who performed both traditional and avant-garde dance. Blank discusses her own involvement with the project, which began with Wilson visiting Hanayagi in Osaka, Japan, when she was sufferering from advanced Alzheimer's disease. Wilson created a video of Hanayagi's face, hands and feet, which accompanies the live performance, along with archival video footage of performances by Hanayagi. The sound score includes music written by David Byrne for The knee plays, the first collaboration between Wilson and Hanayagi, and the text of letters, writings and interviews with Hanayagi, read by others. Blank explains the significance of the project's title. A complete performance of the piece follows.
