Summary
Music critic Tim Page interviews John Williams, an American composer, conductor, and pianist. Williams speaks about his experience composing music for films such as Jaws and Star wars. He says that the best way to write music is to see the film in its unedited version so that you can see its rhythm, atmosphere and dynamics, and to read the script rather than. A composer's chief function, he says, is a rhythm and tempo. The composer also says that music for films is a "sight of hand trick." He discusses his early career and that he enjoys working with music for various genres of films, comparing music he composed for films Jaws and Star wars; the absence of the symphonic style in his music for Star wars trilogy. Williams also talks about his career as a conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra, and the wearing of both conductor and composer hats. He speaks also about writing concert music such as his Flute concerto. He speaks about the danger of popularization of music, and gives advice to young composers to stay closer to the theater and movie theater, and to write music for them. During his interview excerpts from soundtrack of films Jaws and Star wars, and a selection from his Flute concerto performed by London Symphony Orchestra are played.
