- Summary
- Music critic Tim Page interviews American composer Milton Babbitt. Babbitt speaks about misunderstanding of his musical works; and why he is considered a controversial composer. He discusses his article Who cares if you listen? (1958), and how the original title The composer as specialist was changed by an editor without his knowledge or permission. This caused him to react negatively because the title became provocative and did not fit the reality. He still known as the author of this article rather than as a composer. He explains why he quit his teaching career at Princeton University, and does not belong to any university; and he brings the opinions of his younger colleagues that the successful composer should be "on a great world of television or radio." He speaks about two of his favorite composers: Schoenberg and Jerome Kern. Babbitt talks about his works such as All set (1957) and Second string quartet (1954). He speaks about his electronic music, and his work as a consultant composer at the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center. Babbitt talks about the influences of European composers such as Schoenberg and Stravinsky, and gives advice to young composers to use all musical heritage, and to take advantage of all variety of music available today. During his interview excerpts from his work All set, the Second string quartet, and the Reflections for piano and tape sounds are played.
