- Dee Dee Bridgewater talks with Robert Santelli about her father being a trumpetist for Dinah Washington; her early exposure to jazz; being born in Memphis and then growing up Catholic in Flint, Michigan; Detroit and Motown; wanting to be signed to Capitol Records at the age of sixteen; leading an all-girl group as a teenager called the Iridescents; her musical role models being Nancy Wilson, Diahann Carroll, Lena Horne, and Nina Simone; the importance of respecting each individual audience member; touring with the University of Illinois jazz band; working with the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra; how she became an actress; her love of musicals; auditioning to replace Melba Moore in "Purlie"; performing in theatre and concert settings; how she chooses musicians; having no technical training; the importance of being a good listener; her experience working with Max Roach; her experience working with Ray Charles; turning negatives into positives; becoming a producer; living in Paris; becoming a born-again Christian and working with Pat Robertson and the 700 Club; her role as Jazz Ambassador; her interest in communicating with young people about jazz; how she balances her public and private worlds; the importance of spreading a positive message; her National Public Radio show, JazzSet; working with Edsel Gomez on a new album.
