Summary
Music critic Tim Page interviews four young composers: Aaron Kernis, David MacBride, Shawn Allen, and David Hush. The program consists of four segments, one for each composer. In the first segment Aaron Kernis discusses his Stein times seven, a choral work for piano, based on the poetry of Gertrude Stein, excerpts of which are played. In segment 2 David Macbride talks about his group Gageego, and how he is influenced by Chinese music. He sees the group as a fusion of eastern and western styles. Excerpts from his musical composition Gageego are played at the end of the segment. Segment 3 consists of an interview with Allen Shawn, who talks about his career as a composer and about the influence of jazz on his work. Excerpts from his Four jazz preludes are played at the end of the segment. Segment 4 consists of an interview with David Hush, who discusses the influences of both Indian and minimalistic music on his work. Excerpts of his String raga music are played during the interview.
