Ken Peplowski speaks with Will Friedwald about contemplating a career as a comedian; timing of comedy and music; Duke Ellington being his musical hero; working with Artie Shaw; growing up in Garfield Heights, Ohio; playing in polka bands; his father being a cop in Cleveland; how Polish polka music resembles New Orleans jazz; his love of Elvis Presley and the Beatles; wanting honesty in music; working with Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Benny Goodman; his experience at Cleveland State studying with Al Blazer; the Cleveland jazz scene; becoming a clarinetist in the Tommy Dorsey band; the discipline that comes with playing every night; traveling around England with the Dorsey band; moving to New York City; Buddy Morrow as a bandleader; working on an eight-month road tour of "Annie"; his time with the Benny Goodman band; Benny Goodman as a man and bandleader; working with Rosemary Clooney; his relationship with Mel Torme; working with and learning from Bobby Short; his relationship with Sonny Stitt; how the sound comes from the musician, not the equipment; instruments as conduits; playing Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola; working on a new record with a mix of standards; future projects.
