Summary
Buddy De Franco speaks with Will Friedwald about how Benny Goodman introduced the clarinet and swing bands to the United States; starting to play at eight years old, becoming interested in jazz by twelve years old; winning a contest in Philadelphia at the age of thirteen and getting to play with the Tommy Dorsey band; being hired by Dorsey ten years after that contest; his first road-band experience playing with Johnnie "Scat" Davis; playing with Gene Krupa; Krupa's arrest in San Fransisco and the drug stigma attached to jazz musicians; playing with Count Basie; pop solos becoming part of arrangements; getting fired by Tommy Dorsey; Benny Goodman as a bandleader; Artie Shaw versus Benny Goodman as bandleaders; touring Europe with Billie Holiday; working with Ella Fitzgerald; his collaboration with George Shearing; establishing himself as a modern jazz clarinetist; playing with George Russell; starting his own group; the first time he heard Charlie Parker; seeing Parker play and knowing that was the direction music would go; Tommy Dorsey as bandleader; doubling on alto saxophone for years; playing with the Glenn Miller Orchestra; Bill Finnegan charts; his one regret being that he never said yes to playing with Duke Ellington.
