- Victor Goines speaks with Will Friedwald about being in New York City with Bob Wilber, Buddy De Franco and Ken Peplowski celebrating one hundred years of Benny Goodman; student bands; teaching and bandleading at Juilliard and Northwestern University; contributions on the bandstand; teaching methodology; Benny Goodman as a man and a musician; playing with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and the Smithsonian Orchestra; studying Benny Goodman's music; his high school bandleader Donald Richardson; growing up in New Orleans; growing up with Wynton Marsalis; the guidance of Wynton's father, Ellis Marsalis; attending Loyola University; listening to Art Blakey, Count Basie, John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins; the importance of studying the history of music in order to find his own musical voice; Coleman Hawkins as the "Grand-daddy" of saxophone; phrasing and the language of music; being a math teacher and his love of math; how mathematics contributed to his music career and his overall approach to music; playing with Dizzy Gillespie; playing as a guest of Freddie Green; the influence New Orleans has on his music; Chicago, New York City, and New Orleans as the greatest jazz cities; joining Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra; touring with Wynton Marsalis and his septet; the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra as a family; future projects.
