Summary
Music critic Tim Page interviews American composer, writer on music, pianist, and conductor Aaron Copland. He comments on his career as a composer and about his new serious music style with an "American flavor." Copland talks about his early interest in music. He reflects on the influence of Nadia Boulanger, his music teacher in Paris, and conductor and composer Serge Koussevitzky, whom she introduced him to. Copland says Koussevitzky discovered him as a new talent and predicted his successful career as a composer. He talks about his piano works, and comments on his work with dancer and choreographer Martha Graham, and their resulting work, the ballet Appalachian spring. Speaking about the music he composed for this ballet, Copland comments on his fascination with the American West. He talks about one wish of his never fulfilled: he never met the composer Charles Ives. During his interview the excerpts from his Piano variations and Appalachian spring suite (the suite for complete orchestra) are played.
