Rochberg talks about his career as a composer and his artistic evolution; about his musical style called serialism; about neoclassicism; and about the role of composer in modern world. The composer also discusses each of the following works, excerpts of which are then played during the interview: String quartet no. 3 (third movement) (1972), and live studio performance of Carnival music: suite for piano (Fanfares & march, Blues, Largo doloroso, Sfumato, and Toccata-rag).
