- Martha Clarke speaks with John Heilpern about "Garden of earthly delights" and why she chose to revisit the material; collaborating with a new generation; her struggle to fund the revival; her thoughts on Hieronymus Bosch's triptych and the challenge of interpreting hell; her time at Juilliard; her work with Linda Hunt; her time with Pilobolus; her collaborations with writers and incorporating text into her work; movement as abstract; her experience with flying and using flying in her work; working with Robert Israel; her experience working with Jane Greenwood; how the dancers enjoyed interpreting hell; the time it takes her to create a new piece; her process of improvisation; Bosch's use of instruments for torture; wanting her company to feel like a family or community; working to raise the money for the revival; being born and raised in Baltimore; her parents and family history; attending the American Dance Festival at age fifteen; skipping her senior year of high school to start attending Juilliard; studying with Martha Graham's mentor, Louis Horst; Antony Tudor as a main inspiration and how every movement means something; her creative process and choreographing; working with language versus working with textless pieces; "Endangered species"; how she is currently studying flamenco dancing; future projects including a production of "MacBeth".
