- Summary
- Director Robert Falls discusses his life and work, starting with his childhood, when he had no connection to theater beyond the plays he read. He describes his education at the University of Illinois and his arrival at Chicago's Goodman Theatre. He compares dreams to plays in connection with Eugene O'Neill dreaming Desire under the elms. He analyzes the themes and archetypes of O'Neill's works, highlighting his connection to tragedy. He concludes by recounting his experience working on Desire under the elms, including his thoughts on collaborating with designers and actors, the challenge of the dialect, O'Neill's abundance of stage directions, the casting of the play, and his relationship with actor Brian Dennehy.
