- Summary
- Robert Falls, artistic director of the Goodman Theatre since 1985, discusses the history of the Goodman and its role in the Chicago theater scene. He recalls launching his career at the Wisdom Bridge Theater and opening his first season at the Goodman with Brecht's Orchards. Falls describes his relationship with his friend, actor Brian Dennehy, as well as his experiences working with various Goodman Theatre associates. He recounts productions throughout the years, including Arthur Miller's Death of a salesman. He describes the process of planning for seasons, how he enjoys alternating classic plays with contemporary works and how they inform each another, as well as the importance of making theater in a communal setting. Falls touches upon his work in opera, explains why he chose to stay in Chicago rather than go to New York, and outlines his upcoming projects, which include plans for global collaborations.
