Summary
  • In the first segment, playwright Lynn Nottage and actor Saidah Arrika Ekulona discuss Nottage's drama Ruined, which concerns the horrific conditions facing women in Africa's war-torn Congo. Nottage outlines the preliminary research she conducted in Uganda prior to writing the play. Ekulona speaks of her character Mama Nadi, and considers the comparisons some critics have made between Mama Nadi and Bertolt Brecht's Mother Courage.
  • In the second segment, arts critic Elisabeth Vincentelli examines some of the challenges facing journalists such as herself who write for traditional newspapers and magazines in the age of the Internet. She also discusses theater audiences in New York, and recent revivals of Guys and dolls and Blithe spirit.
