- Summary
- Playwright Gina Gionfriddo discusses her play Becky Shaw with hosts Michael Riedel and Susan Haskins. The focus of the conversation is the personality of the drama's title character, whom some critics have compared to Ibsen's Hedda Gabler and Becky Sharp of Thackeray's Vanity Fair. Gionfriddo also talks about the challenge of balancing her playwriting with her job contributing scripts to TV's Law and Order.
- In the second segment, popular music historians David A. Jasen and Robert Kimball examine the legacy of Tin Pan Alley, a discussion prompted by the news that the four New York City buildings on West 28th Street that constituted the original songwriting district by that name are on the verge of being demolished. They explore the origins of the term Tin Pan Alley and discuss some of the best known composers and songs associated with the phrase.
