Summary
Bob Wilber speaks with Will Friedwald about the end of the swing era and the rediscovery of New Orleans-style jazz; growing up in Scarsdale, New York; his first attraction to swing; the first time he heard Sidney Bechet; jazz concerts in high school; his father being a book publisher; attending the Eastman School of Music; wanting to leave Eastman; playing extended tours with Benny Goodman in 1958 and 1959; his relationship with Benny Goodman; transcribing Benny Goodman's solos and orchestrating them for the four clarinetists at the Jazz at Lincoln Center tribute; his work as a jazz arranger; his experience taking lessons from and working with Sidney Bechet; the Sidney Bechet School of Music in Brooklyn; his band in high school; studying with Lennie Tristano and Lee Konitz; Tristano's rejection of standard time signatures; importance of the earliest foundations of jazz; getting drafted into the ARMY and becoming bandleader of the ARMY band school; his relationship and work with the Soprano Summit; being able to apply traditional methods to modern music; Wynton Marsalis and honoring the traditions of jazz.
