Summary
Panel discussion on the work of playwright August Wilson, with a particular focus on his drama Joe Turner's come and gone. The panelists examine Wilson's use of vestigial African cultural traits from the pre-slavery era in the 20th century African American culture of his plays, and also look at some of the historical changes in race relations in America between the early 20th century and the election of Barack Obama in 2008. The panelists discuss the controversy concerning the current revival of Joe Turner's come and gone directed by Bartlett Sher, who is white, despite the playwright's stated preference that his work should be directed by African Americans. The political function of playwriting for African Americans is also examined. After the discussion, the panelists field questions from audience members.
