Summary
Mostly handwritten genealogical research notes, including some 20 notebooks, questionnaires to family members, charts, correspondence, and clippings on the Petty family, including the descendants of Edward Petty, Sr. of Southold, Long Island, New York (by 1650), as well as on the Ferris, Fletcher, Hallock, Lupton, Marston, Mulford, Raynor, Tuthill, and Vail families, compiled by Joseph H. Petty; there are also several personal papers relating to Joseph H. Petty, including a notice of charges by the New York City Police Dept. for signing a letter published in the New York Herald and the New York Tribune, regarding a shooting by the 84th Regiment of the New York State National Guard, July 14, 1871.

Biography
Joseph H. Petty (1826-1901) was a Captain of the Metropolitan Police Force of New York City, served as Assemblyman and Senator in the New York State Legislature, and as Librarian of the New York Genealogical and Biographical Society. He died in Amityville, New York.
