- Summary
- Verdi's gripping opera, from Friedrich Schiller's play, set in mid-16th century Spain, deals with multiple tragedies of idealistic friendship, religious fanaticism and unrequited love. The drama focuses on the struggle between King Philip of Spain and his son and heir Don Carlos over the love of the Queen, who really loves Don Carlos, and on the harsh treatment meted out by Catholic Spain to its rebellious Protestant subjects in the Spanish Netherlands.
