[Begins abruptly.] Ted Shawn speaks about his principles of pedagogy as applied to dance, including his experience teaching Martha Graham and the role he played in her early career; his simile of the teacher as a gardener and Bertha Damon's book: A sense of humus; [short gap at ca. 2:40 into track 3 is followed by the first part of Shawn's second lecture on pedagogy]; his five categories of dance motivation; the material a dance teacher should cover including the topics identified in the chapter headings of his book Dance we must [Dance we must; lectures delivered by Mr. Shawn at George Peabody College for Teachers, Nashville, Tennessee, from June 13th to July 2nd, 1938; c1940].; the principles of movement; the fundamentals of rhythm and time and music; [ends abruptly at track 7; from track 8 the recording returns to the first pedagogy lecture]; the subject-matter of each the 12 classes in the course; the text, namely the above-mentioned Dance we must; dance teachers and teaching, including the problems with dance education in the U.S. today both within and without higher educational institutions; the minimum education and training a dance teacher should be required to have; the importance of offering education in all kinds of dance; more on Martha Graham when a student at the Denishawn School; the dance education offered at the Denishawn School.

  • Sound quality is fair. There are extraneous noises and short gaps but for the most part, the speaker's voice is clearly audible.
  • The recording is out of sequence. Tracks 1 - ca. 2:45 into track 3 and the beginning of track 8 through the end of the recording appear to be from pedagogy lecture no. 1.; the section of the recording that begins ca. 2:45 into track 3 and ends with track 7 is from pedagogy lecture no. 2.
