- Merwin's poem and the colophon are printed on one side of a strip constructed from 3 sheets of foamcore and 9 sheets of stiff paper (Strathmore museum board), joined end to end and folded accordion-style; the foamcore sheets have cutouts, two of which contain painted metal model palm trees, while the cutout on the third reveals a digital print on a sheet of transparent film, mounted on the verso. Three other digital prints on sheets of transparent film are inserted between folds of the paper portion of the strip; one digital print on paper is mounted on verso of the first paper sheet and is partly visible through the cutout in the first foamcore sheet. In addition, box contains sheet with title page and a loose digital print on paper, signed in pencil by Hobson; an instruction sheet, titled "Ways to read Trees," is laid on box lid, and an illustrated slip, titled "Instruction on first reading," wraps around box lid.
- "The impetus to use palm trees as a visual accompaniment to the poem came from the return address in Hawaii on a letter from W.S. Merwin giving his permission. The images of palm trees have been made as monotypes which have been reproduced as high-resolution digital prints on transparent film. They are hinged between pages of Strathmore 2-ply museum board and acid free foamcore with architectural model trees. The windows in the foamcore were cut at Magnolia Editions, Oakland, California. The wooden boxes were acquired over a period of fifteen years with the hope they would someday be useful in a book design with a strong vertical motif. The text pages were printed letterpress at JR Press, San Francisco, and the title on the side of the box was foil-stamped by John DeMerritt, Emeryville, California. The typeface is Poppl-Laudatio. Charles Hobson made the monotypes and designed and assembled the edition with the assitance of Alice Shaw"--Colophon.
- "'Trees' ... [was] originally published in The compass flower by W.S. Merwin, currently collected in Flower & hand by W.S. Merwin. Copyright 1977"--Colophon.
